From Ajaccio airport you can hire a car and drive up north to the island's Italianate northern department, where Bastia is the main town. Here there is much evidence of the former Genoese presence on the island. The Terra Nova quarter, with its baroque chapels and mosaics and the Genoese governors palace are well worth a visit. Bastia also provides a convenient base from which to explore Cap Corse, the 40km long peninsula with spectacular scenery at the northernmost tip of Corsica. You can rent a car at Bastia airport and drive out to explore the fishing villages along the coast, such as Centuri, and the remains of the Genoese towers defending the hillsides. There are idyllic beaches, such as the Plage de Tamarone near Macinaggio, or, for the more energetic, beautiful walks along the Sentier des Douaniers.

Drive inland to Corte, a university town, dominated by a derelict Genoese citadel and use your hire car to visit the natural gorges in the Valee de la Restonica. It is also worth taking a day to drive out to Bergeries de Grotelle and hike up the trail to the glacial lakes.
You could finish your tour in the south of the island at Bonifacio, which is just 12 km from Sardinia. Here the sea is turquoise blue and the rocks have been sculpted by the sand and sea into strange shapes. The beaches are superb and there are plenty of water sports and golf courses.
By now you should have gained an appreciation of the huge variety of Corsican nature from the lofty peaks of the granite mountains, to the sheltered inlets of its peaceful beaches.
